Content Management Systems

There's an old internet saying: Content is king!

In the first decade of the 21st century, blogging became a mainstream phenomenon. Free open-source software such as Wordpress and Joomla became wildly popular amongst individual bloggers who would write about topics that interested them.

A Content Management System, or CMS in short, allows a large base of users to create, edit or delete content, mainly in the form of HTML pages and associated elements such as images, videos and documents. It provides a role based access control to data and comes with a user management system. It contains the basic logic of formation of blocks that can be displayed in a web page based on the user functionality provided. It plays a major role in ensuring that website code and data are kept separate. The data, or content, is parsed through a presentation layer in the CMS to output usable information, in the website's theme, to the browser.

The most appealing feature about these Content Management Systems is the Administration Back-end. It provided an intuitive way for non-technical users to input, edit and delete content on their website, without knowing or writing a single line of HTML. This means that website owners are no longer dependent on their webmasters for regular updates.
