More about Flash & ActionScript

Flash is an Adobe product used for advanced animation.

In order to render Flash components in the browser, the Adobe Flash Player must be installed in the browser as a plugin. This plugin is available free of cost from Adobe.

Flash contains a scripting language called ActionScript. ActionScript is used primarily for the development of websites and software using the Adobe Flash Player platform. Current versions of ActionScript added functionality allowing for the creation multimedia-rich web applications with streaming media.

Flash is a rich media platform, popular for adding animation and interactivity to web pages. It has been around since 1996 and is part of the Adobe line of products.

Flash is commonly used in the web arena to create animation, advertisements and components such as video and audio players that are embedded into a web page to provide the user with a multimedia rich platform in the browser. Flash can manipulate vector as well as raster graphics and supports bi-directional streaming of video and audio.

Flash components, as objects on a web page have the extension of .swf (ShockWave Flash). Video files that are created using Flash are also quite popular for embedding into web pages and come with the extension of .flv (Flash Video).

Deciding to use Flash

WebrMedia believes in the open web. It means that whenever possible, we choose to use freely available open standards web software. Flash is a proprietary platform, owned by Adobe.

However, there are instances when open web standards do not meet the client requirement. We build interactive Flash components and Flash-based websites. Flash is best utilized when visually-appealing animation is of primary importance, or when advanced 2D and 3D animation is required on the website.

Flash-based websites generally do not lend themselves to Search Engine Optimization, and should be used only where other alternatives aren't available. Flash is also not used on Apple's iPhone and iPad. So, if you want to target users of such devices, then Flash may not be the way forward.

We recommend that clients keep Flash content to a minimum - mainly for advanced animation - unless absolutely necessary.
